about

It’s 1981 at the Annual St. John’s Regatta. The record time to beat is 9:13, set by the Outer Cove crew in 1901. Skipper Jim Ring of Quidi Vidi started training a crew in 1977 and in 1981, the Smith Stockley crew enters the race. When they cross the finish line in the new record time of 9:12.04, the crowd goes wild.
To commemorate the event, a song was written by Pat Casey and recorded by Skipper Jim Ring, son Randy and others in the group “The Quidi Vidi Ceili Band”. Side B features the signature Regatta tune “Up the Pond”.
