about

During the decade from 1951 to 1961, folksong collector Kenneth Peacock made numerous visits to Newfoundland, recording traditional singers for The National Museum of Canada. His work was later published in a 3 volume set of books called “Songs of the Newfoundland Outports”. The collection presented lyrics and music notation to over 1000 folk songs and became the “bible” for young musicians such as the band Figgy Duff and others who wished to learn and perform authentic Newfoundland folk material. In the early 1980s, through collaboration with folklorist Edith Fowke and The Canadian Folk Music Society, I learned that many of those early field recordings had been preserved, which led me to contact Mr. Peacock and the National Museum of Canada with a proposal to release some of the better recordings on a LP. The result was this album of wonderful unaccompanied singing from the 1950s, representing singers from many different parts of the Province. I felt the project was especially significant given that most of these singers were no longer living, enabling the listener to be transported back in time to an era when outport customs still thrived. Accompanying the record is an 8 page booklet with photos, lyrics and liner notes plus a piece by Kenneth Peacock himself entitles “The Collector Recollects” (well worth the read). This 1984 release is the last of the vinyl albums from my label, Pigeon Inlet Productions, and one which I have always taken great pride in having produced. We are forever indebted to Kenneth Peacock for this seminal work in preserving and making available this wealth of precious material.

about

Kelly Russell St. John'S, Newfoundland and Labrador

In 1979 I created "Pigeon Inlet Productions", a record label dedicated to production, promotion and distribution of recordings by NL folk artists who would likely never be recorded by the major labels. These records have not been available for a very long time and I felt it was time that some permanent record exists that these records exist - Kelly ... more
